Born and bred to be crewkin, Renna is devastated by the death of her ship and her kin. When her company’s medical department advises the few remaining survivors to commit suicide and join their kin in death, Renna refuses. Knowing she can never join another crewkin, she seeks a berth on one of the short-haul shippers running cargo hauls between the planets. Integration into ‘norm’ crew seems impossible until she joins the crew of the Vagrant Spirit. Her captain seems as desperate for any capable crewman as Renna is for a ship’s position. This job, this journey will propel her into a new world.
There is nothing so true as change is inevitable. Rumours of a new engine capable of thrusting a ship greater distances in a fraction of the time a crewkin ship takes, threatens Markham Company’s business. There is only one thing left to do—get rid of the evidence, the last survivor, and anyone else who threatens discovery.
Crewkin eBook Rhobin L Courtright
Renna Markham3 is a cloned human developed and trained by the Markham Company to function as a member of a long haul crew. The "crewkin" are educated to a unique set of values and culture which serves to isolate them from the "norms". When an experimental engine blows up, the few surviving crewkin are encouraged to suicide. But Renna does the unexpected and walks away. After a couple of unsuccessful short haul jobs, Renna is offered a spot on the Vagrant Spirit. The Vagrant Spirit's cargo turns out to be the Markham company's experimental engine. The engine re-starts in the cargo hold, takes over the ship, and blasts through hyperspace ending up where no man has gone before. Now how to get home? What made the first ship blow up? The enforced isolation at the end of nowhere gives both the dehumanized clone and the budding engine AI time to develop and evolve. This is a great space adventure by the author of "Rogues Rules" and "Magic Aegis".Product details

Crewkin eBook Rhobin L Courtright Reviews
Been a long time since last I found a gem like this! Ms. Courtright has taken one truly original idea, put her own twist on some other, somewhat traditional, themes, and created a world that is original, fascinating and believable.
Renna Markham3 is one member of a group (kin = family, sort of) cloned for the sole purpose of crewing spaceships on long-haul voyages. When an accident destroys her ship and most of her crewkin, she is expected to 'become one with her group' by committing suicide. She chooses not to, and so becomes the ultimate outsider. The only survivor of her kin group, she has no social or survival skills at all, and very few options. When she joins the crew of a scruffy, battered independant trader, her biggest challenge is to overcome her early conditioning and learn how to exist in the "norm" world.
The characters are vividly drawn, the society they inhabit is well constructed and well described, the situations they encounter are believable, and the dangers they face are compelling. I cared about them from the moment I met them.
This is great stuff! I loved it! I haven't been this enthusiastic about a newly discovered author in many years. Read it, you'll love it too!
One additional note. I didn't give this 5 stars because I reserve those for the likes of Robert Heinlein, John Varley, Harlan Ellison, Ursula Le Guinn, Andre Norton, et. al. If she continues along her present path, Rhobin Courtright will one day join that group.
I was very excited after reading the first quarter of this book. Original concept, very well-written. Renna is a great character, who has to change herself from a cookie-cutter clone into a fully actualized human being. The idea of cloned humans bred and trained to be a starship crew is excellent.
The rest of the crew of the Vagrant Spirit were totally believable. I love when I have a movie running in my head as I read. I could easily picture Jake, Zak, Ezry, Cutter, Lock, and (I love this name!) Ship Dog. I had a vivid image of the ship and crew. I rejoiced as Renna turned from Kin to Norm, and even fell in love. Wonderful transition of a character's development.
Then the middle slowed to a snail's pace. I really like this book, but wish about 10-20K words were cut. It became somewhat repetitious through the 1/3 to 2/3 part of the book. I can't be too specific, because I don't like to write spoiler reviews, but I just wanted to say "hey, I know that. Let's move on!"
But the last third picked up nicely and I ended with a positive view of Ms. Courtright's writing. Yes, I'll buy more of her books.
It's great to read true scifi. Yes, there's a love affair in it, but this ain't your usual SF Romance, where the romance outweighs the SF. The technical detail is stunning and ran true.
Super job, Ms. Courtright, just super.
Why haven't more people read this? It's much better than most recent sci fi. Renna is a compelling main character. Her dilemma is poignant and dramatic. Really great read!
Wow! This book caught my attention from page one. Original sci-fi has it all. Adventure, suspense and romance. The author did an excellent job with the characters and storyline. I started this book last night stayed up late reading and got up at 5am to finish it this morning. I hope there will be more adventures in the future with Vera and the crew. Thank you Rhobin Courtright for an excellent story. Please write more related to this book.
This SF space opera keeps us guessing.
When a heroine bred for long space hauling finds herself banished to the normal world of short hauling, she has to work to fit in. In fact, she has to work to find a job. Regular ship crews don't want a "Crewkin" because they're different.
Then when she finds one to take her on, catastrophe strikes. A spaceship engine that her new ship is hauling springs to life (or turns itself on). It takes over and even molds the old ship to its specifications around the crew!
And we thought HAL was scary!
But not to worry. There's a romance and space walk and lots of heroics involved. Some of the characters seem a little thin but the pacing's good. I enjoyed the ride. Er, read.
