Right after Mark’s next-door neighbor is murdered, he gets a new neighbor--the beautiful but mysterious Sylvia, who has just arrived from London. Mark is drawn into a mutually obsessive relationship with Sylvia. She is secretive regarding her past and Mark’s friends caution him that she can’t be trusted. But Mark won’t listen to his friends or to the priest who later claims that Sylvia is a deadly threat. Mark is enchanted by Sylvia’s beauty and charm, even though dating her has its challenges. Whether it’s performing gymnastics on the ledge of the Golden Gate Bridge, creating an embarrassing scene at the wedding of Mark’s best friend, or shocking Mark with her unusual sexual proclivities, Sylvia never misses an opportunity to make a bad first impression. When Mark first meets Sylvia, he tells her, “You’re the girl of my dreams!” Sylvia smiles and responds with a warning--“Be careful what you wish for.”

I thought the initial romance/courtship between Mark and Sylvia was the best part. I enjoy stories of seduction, a mysterious woman and an interesting male protagonist. I also enjoyed the vivid descriptions of San Francisco, the story was very grounded in the place of the city. Having lived there for 3 years I enjoyed it like strolling the streets of an old neighborhood. As the story progresses and Sylvia's true nature comes out the suspense and horror aspect take center stage and are also fun.Product details

The Vampire Girl Next Door Richard Arbib 9780615572635 Books Reviews
A very good read. Very different.
I read a lot of tech manuals and computer books, hate to admit I haven't read many novels the past 30 years. I'm impartial to the sci-fi genre, but wanted to try something different. This was the one that I picked up and read and now I'm thirsty to read more like it. The vampires depicted are in our modern world and they exist among us, it's an interesting premise but I won't give away spoilers. It is a bit thought provoking at times, as well as humorous.
What a roller coaster ride! I was riveted from the first chapter on! If you like the vampire genre, mixed with romance, sex, action and suspense, and a good sprinkling of humor, then this book is definitely for you. I felt I was transported into the book and was *there* with Mark and Sylvia. I started the sequel, "The Vampire Girl in London" and am looking forward to a similar and even better experience.
This is a boy/girl love story, but the girl just happens to be a vampire. Mark falls deeply in love with Sylvia, not knowing that she is a vampire. The twists in the story lead the reader through a fantasy world in which vampires live and prosper. I found myself on the side of the vampire world and sympathetic to their needs. This book is a page turner...you are waiting for the next twist in the story as you make your way through the book. I recommend this as an entertaining and enjoyable read!
I was never into vampires or werewolves, nor romance novels. I hadnt read anything just for fun in a long time. I came across this novel and decided to give it a chance. I am happy that I did. It had nothing of the gore you encounter in movies. Those scenes were written straight forward without drawing your mind to details. I was easily able to identify with Mark, but even occasionally with Sylvia as well through the book. It was interesting to look at life without fearing the passage of time, but to go forward with excitement and interest at what the future may hold. I was quite interested in how history in the book showed villagers to exhibit suspicion and fear of anyone different, and that sometimes it resulted in executions of suspected witches, vampires and werewolves. I also enjoyed descriptions of the locale in San Francisco, bringing back good memories. I enjoyed the book and have ordered the sequel.
After a series of bizarre murders, including his noisy irritating neighbour, Mark Sheridan feels guilty excitement at the prospect of someone new moving in next door. From the moment they meet Mark is irresistibly and irrevocably mesmerized by the exotic beauty of Sylvia Martin. It's an intense mutual attraction and within just a few short days, neither can imagine life without the other. Thus begins a roller coaster ride to the finish as Mark discovers Sylvia`s true nature and ultimately his own. Fast paced and well written, The Vampire Girl Next Door will keep you turning pages well into the night!
In looking for different material to read, I stumbled onto this book online (, of course) and ordered it June 15, 2012. As I had other books ahead of I just was able to get to it the week of October 22nd. I echo the sentiment of others when I also say, this was different that any of the vampire books that I've ever read. It's a book that held my interest to the point that, when I didn't have the book in hand, the book had me wondering where the story was going to happen next!
The main characters
Sylvia - a proud, beautiful, mysterious girl - with a body a man could sink his teeth into - but watch out! She bites!
Mark - he's dreamed of Sylvia for years - and his dreams come true - but they WILL COST HIM! As the saying goes..."It's just too good to be true!" (Boy, I'll say!)
Although Sylvia is at best reluctant to share her secrets with Mark (for good reason), she's drawn to Mark - and, of course, Mark is instantly attracted to Sylvia. But, this relationship is very costly to Mark...will he...pay the price?
Read on and see!
Arbib's style is straight-forward and somewhat terse for the majority of the book. His timing and descriptive style works for me (I actually laughed out loud at parts). In the end, I didn't know I was getting setup for a sequel (I hope that Arbib's at work on it - I'll buy it when it goes on sale).
I rate "The Vampire Girl Next Door"...Five stars!
P.S. This really is a slightly different vampire story for you to consider!
P.P.S. Then there's the matter of that...uh, "golden shower" that gets discussed...Ewwww! But then again, whatever "floats Sylvia's boat!" (Insistent, isn't she?)
Overall, I liked this book - and recommend it
